Treatment overview
Breast reduction surgeryโor reduction mammaplastyโremoves excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a breast size more proportional to the patientโs body. We perform this procedure to relieve physical discomfort and improve quality of life. Each surgery is customised to balance aesthetic goals with functional relief.
Beyond cosmetic improvement, breast reduction alleviates chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain caused by disproportionately large breasts. Patients often experience improved posture, greater ability to exercise, and enhanced self-confidence. The reshaped breasts are lifted and more symmetric, providing both physical and emotional benefits.
- Women experiencing chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain attributable to heavy breasts
- Patients with deep bra-strap grooves, skin irritation, or rashes beneath the breast fold
- Individuals whose breast size restricts physical activity or exercise
- Women who feel self-conscious or limited in clothing choices due to breast volume
- Patients in overall good health who have realistic goals about size reduction
Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes 2.5โ4 hours. Our team commonly employs the Hall-Findlay technique. In some cases, the inverted-T incision pattern is used depending on the volume to be removed. Excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin are excised, and the nippleโareola complex is repositioned to a more youthful height on the newly shaped breast mound.
A superior or superomedial pedicle technique is used to maintain blood supply and sensation to the nippleโareola complex during repositioning. Liposuction may be employed at the lateral chest to refine the transition between the breast and underarm. We sculpt each breast individually, comparing symmetry at multiple stages throughout the operation to ensure a balanced result.
- Days 1โ3: Moderate discomfort and swelling managed with pain relief. Surgical drains may be in place and are typically removed within 48 hours. A compression bra is worn at all times.
- Days 4โ7: Swelling and bruising begin to diminish. Patients notice immediate relief from prior back and shoulder pain.
- Weeks 2โ4: Most patients return to sedentary work by week 2. Driving can resume once pain medication is no longer needed. No heavy lifting or high-impact activities.
- Months 2โ3: Breast shape settles and softens. Scars begin to lighten. Gradual return to exercise is guided by follow-up appointments.
- Months 6โ12: Final breast size and contour are established. Scars continue to fade and flatten, becoming significantly less visible.
