Treatment overview

Abdominoplasty โ€” commonly referred to as a tummy tuck โ€” is one of the most consistently rewarding body procedures performed at Olive Skin & Aesthetics. It removes excess skin and fat from the lower and mid abdomen while simultaneously tightening the underlying abdominal muscles, restoring a flat, firm, and sculpted midsection.

We perform abdominoplasty as a nuanced, anatomy-driven procedure โ€” not a one-size-fits-all operation. The extent of surgery is precisely matched to the degree of skin laxity, fat distribution, and muscle separation present, ranging from a mini abdominoplasty for patients with isolated lower abdominal concerns to a full or extended abdominoplasty for those with more comprehensive changes around the torso.

When combined with liposuction of the flanks and waist โ€” a technique sometimes called a high-definition or 360ยฐ tummy tuck โ€” the result is an hourglass silhouette that is both natural-looking and structurally sound.

  • Adults with excess skin and fat in the lower or mid abdomen that does not respond to diet and exercise
  • Women who have completed their family and experienced abdominal skin laxity or muscle separation (diastasis recti) following pregnancy
  • Individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight and have a residual apron of loose abdominal skin
  • Patients at or near their stable ideal body weight โ€” abdominoplasty is a contouring procedure, not a weight-loss operation
  • Non-smokers or those willing to cease smoking at least 6 weeks before and 6 weeks after surgery
  • Adults in good general health without medical conditions that impair wound healing
  • Those who have realistic expectations about the resulting scar along the lower abdomen and around the navel

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia and takes approximately 2โ€“4 hours depending on the extent of surgery. our team makes a low, bikini line incision placed carefully within the bikini line so it remains concealed under underwear and swimwear.

The abdominal skin is lifted to expose the underlying rectus muscles. Where diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles) is present โ€” a near-universal finding in post-pregnancy patients โ€” the muscles are re-approximated and sutured in the midline, restoring a natural muscular corset and significantly reducing waist circumference.

Excess skin is resected, the remaining skin is re-draped downward under careful tension, and the navel is repositioned naturally through a new opening. Liposuction is routinely combined to address the flanks and define the waist, and for full or extended procedures, the incision may be extended around the flanks to address the lower back. Drains are placed before closure.

  • Days 1โ€“3: Rest at home with head and knees slightly elevated to reduce tension on the incision. Mild to moderate pain managed with prescribed medication. Compression garment worn continuously.
  • Days 4โ€“7: Short gentle walks encouraged to reduce swelling and clot risk. Drains typically removed. Showering with care permitted.
  • Weeks 2โ€“4: Most patients return to light desk work. Avoid any activity that engages the core or causes abdominal strain. Swelling visibly reduces.
  • Months 2โ€“3: Contour improvements clearly visible. Light exercise (walking, cycling) resumes. Core exercise and heavy lifting remain restricted.
  • Months 4โ€“6: Full exercise programme resumed with clearance. Scar matures from pink to skin-tone. Final result emerges.
  • Month 6+: Scars continue to soften for 12โ€“18 months. A healthy stable weight preserves results long-term.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is diastasis recti, and how does abdominoplasty repair separated abdominal muscles?

Diastasis recti is the vertical separation of the rectus abdominis muscles away from the midline, caused by stretching of the fibrous linea alba during pregnancy or major weight fluctuations. This creates an abdominal bulge, poor core stability, and lower back strain that cannot be corrected by exercise. During an abdominoplasty, the surgeon performs internal muscle plication โ€” placing heavy, permanent braided sutures along the entire length of the abdominal wall from the ribcage to the pubic bone. This acts like an internal corset, flattening the stomach, narrowing the waistline, and restoring core intra-abdominal strength.

What is the difference between a Full Tummy Tuck, a Mini Tummy Tuck, and an Extended Tummy Tuck?

A Mini Tummy Tuck targets only the lower abdomen beneath the navel with a shorter incision, does not reposition the belly button, and repairs lower muscle laxity. A Full Tummy Tuck addresses the entire abdominal wall โ€” tightening muscles from ribs to pubis, removing loose skin and stretch marks between the navel and pubic line, contouring flanks with liposuction, and cleanly repositioning the belly button. An Extended Tummy Tuck extends the incision laterally around the hips to eliminate loose tissue folds across the lower back, commonly performed after massive weight loss.

Where will the surgical scar be positioned, and will it show in swimwear?

The incision is placed low on the lower abdomen โ€” spanning horizontally between the hip bones, beneath the underwear and bikini line. Prior to surgery, you can wear your favorite swimwear or low-rise underwear so the surgical team can map the incision line beneath your preferred clothing boundaries. While the scar is long, it matures and fades into a thin, pale line over 12 to 18 months, easily concealed beneath two-piece swimwear.

How is the belly button (umbilicus) preserved or recreated to look completely natural?

In a full tummy tuck, your original belly button remains attached to its deep muscular stalk on the abdominal wall. The redundant skin is pulled downward over it, and a new, anatomically designed opening is created. Advanced inset techniques โ€” deepening the umbilical depression, trimming excess periumbilical fat, and placing subtle internal anchoring sutures โ€” ensure the navel has a youthful, slightly hooded, vertical oval appearance without circular or unnatural external scarring.

What should I expect regarding surgical drains, and when are they removed?

Temporary closed-suction drains are placed to evacuate normal lymphatic fluid and blood from beneath the abdominal skin flap, preventing seroma formation. Patients or caregivers record daily drainage output. Once output drops below 25 to 30 mL over a 24-hour period (typically around 5 to 8 days post-op), the drains are gently removed in the clinic with minimal discomfort. Progressive tension sutures (internal quilting) are also utilized to minimize dead space and reduce drain duration.

How long will I need to walk hunched over, and when can I stand completely straight?

Because the abdominal skin and core muscles are repaired under firm tension, you will walk in a slightly flexed position (bent forward at the hips about 15 to 20 degrees) for the first 7 to 10 days to avoid stress on the lower incision. When resting, maintain a beach-chair position with head elevated and knees bent over pillows. As tissues naturally relax and stretch, you will gradually stand fully upright between day 10 and day 14.

Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck, or should I wait until I have finished having children?

A tummy tuck does not prevent a safe, full-term pregnancy โ€” the abdominal wall and uterus retain elasticity to expand safely. However, a subsequent pregnancy will stretch and re-separate surgically repaired muscles and redilate the skin, compromising the aesthetic results of the operation. Plastic surgeons strongly recommend postponing an abdominoplasty until your family is complete and your body weight is stable.

When can I return to daily activities, driving, and core workouts?

Light walking begins on day 1 to promote circulation. Desk-based office work resumes after 10 to 14 days. Driving can be resumed around 2 to 3 weeks, once you are off prescription pain medications and can brake comfortably. Light cardio (treadmill walking) begins at 3 to 4 weeks, while direct core exercises (planks, crunches, heavy lifting >15 kg) must be strictly avoided until 6 to 8 weeks to protect internal fascial healing.
